Hundreds of dads dressed in slippers are expected to meet at a Shropshire hotel this month.
The Lakeside Restaurant and the Sir John Bayley Suite at the Buckatree Hall Hotel will transform into a convention celebrating slippers of all shapes and sizes, styles, designs and in different states of repair.
But in fact the event will simply be a celebration of dad’s and is aimed at encouraging them to put their feet up.
Bosses at the family-run hotel want dads to come to the Father’s Day lunch on June 15 in their indoor shoes. And those that do will be rewarded with a free pint of beer.
Wayne Jenson, general manager at the hotel at the foot of the Wrekin in Wellington and father to two daughters, said: “Us dads always seem to be forgotten so we wanted to give people the opportunity to offer something else on Father’s Day.
“Hopefully we’ll see a huge range of slippers on display and there might even be a few brand new ones that have been given as Father’s Day presents on the day.
“It will be something we have never seen before at the hotel, usually you think of putting on your Sunday best when you go out for lunch for a special occasion.
“I am interested to see who will turn up in what – if you’re struggling for an idea of what to get your dad for Father’s Day it would be a great opportunity to embarrass him with some big novelty slippers – but at least he’ll get a free pint too.”
The landmark hotel has an 80-cover restaurant as well as 62 bedrooms, a 50-cover bar and a 200-capacity function room.
It was owned by the Matrix Group and operated by Swallow Hotels until Grant Moon and his family bought it almost three years ago.
It has since undergone a £1million redevelopment and increased the number of events it puts on for people in Telford, Shropshire and beyond.
Mr Jenson added: “Being a family-owned hotel we put a big focus on family events here.
“As we are not a chain we have the freedom to do what best suits our customers.
“This new initiative is one way that we can show our regular and new customers how important we think family is and how much we want to focus on celebrating that.”
The Father’s Day lunch on June 15 costs £13.95 for adults and £7.50 children.
