Shropshire Chamber of Commerce is celebrating National Apprenticeship Week by shining a spotlight on the passion, progress and day-to-day variety enjoyed by its own apprentices.

Finance assistant apprentice Chloe Symms is now in her second year at the Chamber’s Telford offices, while Grace Bywater is in her first year as an events and training apprentice.

They sat down with the Chamber’s marketing co‑ordinator – and former apprentice – Ella Preece to reflect on their journeys so far.

Both say the breadth of experience and the chance to learn on the job have been key to their success, and job satisfaction.

Grace, who supports the delivery of the Chamber’s busy calendar of events, said: “Every day is different, which is what I enjoy.

“Sometimes we’re out and about setting up at venues and hosting events, and other days we’re in the office speaking to potential venues, organising speakers, and talking with members about what they want from future events.

“I graduated from university and wanted more practical experience, specifically in events. An apprenticeship felt like the perfect way to do that. It’s giving me the chance to meet so many different people, and it’s proving to be a great experience.”

Chloe, whose role helps to keep the Chamber’s financial operations running smoothly, added: “Much like Grace, every day can be different, but a lot of my work goes on behind the scenes.

“It’s about making sure we’re paying our venues, trainers and suppliers, and ensuring members receive the correct invoices for their packages.

“I chose an apprenticeship because I didn’t want to go to university but still wanted a strong qualification. The Chamber offered exactly what I was looking for in accounting. I love the variety of work and the new challenges it brings.”

National Apprenticeship Week celebrates the positive impact apprenticeships have on individuals, employers and the wider economy.

Shropshire Chamber champions apprenticeships as a powerful route into skilled careers, offering hands‑on experience, professional development and the chance to contribute meaningfully from day one.

Chief executive Ruth Ross said: “It’s really encouraging to see how these opportunities are helping young professionals thrive, and we’re proud to be part of their journey.”
