Shrewsbury Colleges Group rises to the challenge of placing T level students into industry.

A record 116 students were placed with employers on industry placements this year.

This amazing achievement is thanks to a dynamic and pro-active team at Shrewsbury Colleges Group, supporting the seven brand new T levels on offer to school leavers this year. These two year technical programmes not only provide specialist subject teaching and learning, but also include a mandatory, industry placement of at least 45 days.

The T level offer is wide-ranging, including Construction, Engineering (Mechanical or Electronics), Early Years, Health, Digital and Business, so with such a diverse range of career prospects, the securing of these placements were not without their challenges. However, as the team engaged with a wide variety of employers across the county, promoting the benefits of taking students on placement as well as aiming to place the right student with the right employer, they have exceeded all expectations.

Just imagine the hurdles that need to be jumped for the Construction T level student who wanted design experience rather than surveying, lived in Ellesmere and at 16, unable to drive. Just a typical example of the day-to-day challenges that faced our brilliant work experience team throughout this past year.

So, as the team take their well-deserved break for the summer, the college wish to recognise the hard work they have put into this vital part of the T level programme. The students are making excellent progress and Shrewsbury College wishes them well as they progress to their second year, whilst preparing to welcome a whole new intake of students and yes, a whole new set of industry placements!
