Shropshire students have been industrially working at  running their own small businesses this academic year following the Company Programme initiative via Young Enterprise. Young Enterprise is an educational charity that has been operational for over 60 years delivering programmes covering employability  and work readiness, financial education and entrepreneurial skills.

5 teams entered the competition to be crowned Shropshire Company of the Year at a fabulous Showcase held at Harper Adams University on 30th April. The winning team called TagALong from Newport Girls High School will now compete at the Midlands Company of the Year event. The 5 teams had a variety of products including a card game, keyrings, phone accessories and a storage bag. TagAlong had designed a unique carrier clip to hold items on the outside of a bag.

The students had to produce accounts, a company report and had an interview with the panel of judges. They also had to do a live presentation to a large audience about their business and their journey. Along the way other events have included a Trade Fair and a Pitch to the Panel.  The experience will have given the students a valuable insight into how a business operates successfully as they have navigated boardroom meetings, production and design issues and managed a sales strategy.

Teresa Fisher  ( Educational Partnership Manager for Shropshire ) said "Company Programme provides a unique opportunity for young people to develop skills that are highly valued in the workplace – for example they learn teamwork and resilience. We would love for more educational establishments  to be involved from Shropshire  – schools and apprenticeship programmes please get in touch!"
