The RTITB Instructor Academy is now an approved ELCAS training provider. ELCAS is the Enhanced Learning Credits Administration Service. It is a scheme by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) that supports learning opportunities for those in the UK Armed Forces. Both during and after service.
ELCAS approval means that eligible service leavers and veterans will be able to use Enhanced Learning Credits (ELC) to fund selected courses with the RTITB Instructor Academy. This will open doors to nationally recognised qualifications. And support career development and the transition back to civilian life.
This is a meaningful step towards helping ex-Forces personnel excel in fulfilling new careers via a clear supported pathway. While also welcoming new talent to the logistics and transport industries, which are facing ongoing skills shortages.
Supporting a successful transition from military to civilian life
Leaving the Armed Forces is a major life change. Many service leavers have valuable skills and experience. But translating those into a new career isn’t always straightforward.
According to research, 5% of service leavers were unemployed six months after leaving the military. For those medically discharged, the unemployment rate was even higher at 9%, with 15% economically inactive.
This highlights that some challenges remain around translating military skills into civilian employment. That’s where the RTITB Instructor Academy can help bridge the gap. Assisting service-leavers into roles that are in high demand. Providing a sense of purpose, structure, and progression that many veterans value.
ELCAS-funded courses that build real careers
The RTITB Instructor Academy offers a range of ELCAS-approved courses. All equip eligible candidates with the skills and qualifications needed to become professional Instructors and Assessors. Options include:
- LGV/HGV Assessor – 4-day course
- LGV/HGV Instructor – 7-day course
- Driver CPC Instructor Initial (not available for remote Instructor course options)
- Materials Handling Equipment (MHE) Instructor / Lift Truck Instructor
These roles are all especially vital to the logistics, warehousing, and transport industries. Sectors that are currently facing a shortfall of drivers and struggling to recruit warehouse staff.
By training as a workplace transport Instructor, service leavers will have a recognised qualification. This will help to secure meaningful employment.
Instructors will also play an essential role in helping to train the next generation of the workforce. Ensuring safety, compliance, and continuity across the supply chain.
Building skills, confidence, and a new future
These courses don’t just teach technical skills. They help build confidence, leadership, communication skills, and a renewed sense of purpose. For many veterans and service leavers, becoming a professional Instructor is a natural extension of their military experience. Training others and maintaining high standards were often everyday responsibilities.
Employers in the logistics sector increasingly recognise the value of hiring Instructors with military backgrounds. They share the same commitment to discipline, reliability, and a strong safety culture. They can bring that into transport and logistics operations.
Through ELCAS approval, the RTITB Instructor Academy hopes to help expand the pool of capable Instructors. Helping deliver relevant skills to employers.
A trusted training route to a professional career
For MoD resettlement officers, the RTITB Instructor Academy provides a reliable, structured training route to recommend to service leavers. The courses build on existing military experience and qualifications in LGV/HGV driving. While offering practical, accredited qualifications that can lead directly to employment.
