The importance of sustainable economic growth is fundamental to the prosperity of the county and this year has seen the council introduce Shropshire onto the world stage as being a great place to live, learn, work, and visit.
The Economic Growth Team within the council identifies the many opportunities that exist for inward investment while encouraging its indigenous businesses to develop and flourish.
Relationships are forged with major employers and the county's small to medium sized businesses are supported through the Marches Growth Hub Shropshire. The Hub provides signposting advice, guidance and a directory of all the business support initiatives and funding available in the county. A ' virtual' hub is complemented by physical hubs in Hereford, Telford and the Food Enterprise Centre at Battlefield in Shrewsbury, a joint initiative with the Marches Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP). Consultation with business is sought at many levels and focus is maintained through working closely with the Shropshire Business Board.
The Marches Growth Hub in Shropshire is so successful that an additional hub opened in 2018 at the Marches Centre for Manufacturing & Technology (MCMT) in Bridgnorth, and a presence was established within the University Centre Shrewsbury. An 'outreach' programme also ensures that businesses can access support right across the county.
To achieve its vision to create a foundation for sustainable economic prosperity, the Council seeks out new funding opportunities to support housing and transport projects by working with internal colleagues and partners like the Marches LEP. The Marches LEP Technical Assistance Team provides support and advice to businesses on external funding sources and helps to bring funding into the county from Government and a range of other sources.
Shropshire is an exciting place to be in business. The council is a partner in the MCMT, supports the Centre for Research in Environmental Science and Technology (CREST) and is a key player in the development of Agri-Tech West led by Harper Adams University.
Place these innovations alongside the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Hospital Centre of Excellence in Oswestry, cutting-edge creative companies, an established Food and Drink sector and a Visitor Economy attracting 11m people each year and the future is bright for Shropshire's key sectors, creating appealing sector propositions to bring new businesses and investment into the county.
