As a Shropshire Chamber Patron, Thomas Consulting has experienced networking from a fresh perspective, taking it to the next level by stepping up to chair one of the Chamber’s ever-growing networking events. This unique position has given them a deeper understanding of the power of local business connections. Through our Connect Effect campaign, we explored how networking has uplifted their people, their business, and their overall confidence.

Bridgnorth Networking chair role

Thomas Consulting is a dependable organisation delivering structural and civil design services, and over the years they have continually invested time in building meaningful connections.

Diane Brown, Regional Director, has chaired the Bridgnorth Networking Event for several years and describes it as “homely, niche, and consistently welcoming new faces.”

“My chair role has naturally raised brand awareness. I don’t necessarily ‘sell’ Thomas Consulting during the events; I see it more as an ambassador role, focusing on helping newcomers feel comfortable and supporting the growth of the group.”

Her leadership reinforces Thomas Consulting’s profile locally through consistent visibility, approachability, and genuine relationship building.

Networking evolution and reflection

After attending many networking events over the years, Diane gravitates towards more relaxed and focused formats, especially Business Expos, which allow for deeper conversations and attract a wider audience.

With experience also comes personal reflection.

“I am not one to notice other people’s mistakes when networking; everyone slips up, and that’s just human! But personally, I’ve learned that you must think before you speak. You don’t want to come across as dismissive or unintentionally discourage anyone.”

Advocacy for younger staff

To keep things fresh and broaden the opportunities, Thomas Consulting actively sends different team members, particularly graduates and new starters, in Diane’s place. This helps build their confidence, exposes them to real business environments, and also supports the development of future talent.

“Each individual person will have an entirely different networking experience, creating contrasting conversations and new connections. It’s such a simple and effective way to keep people interested in our company.”

Personal development

Before joining Thomas Consulting, Diane experienced a period that heavily damaged her self-belief. When she first started networking, she felt extremely nervous delivering 60-second pitches and often doubted her worth.

“You have to step outside of your comfort zone when networking and really believe in what you’re selling; rebuilding my confidence was a journey in itself.”

Through consistent networking, encouragement from others, and positive feedback, she gradually rebuilt her confidence and now speaks far more comfortably, even receiving uplifting praise from attendees at events such as Network of Women.

Tips for others wanting to start networking

Here are Diane’s top pieces of advice:

  • Just go for it. Attend different types of networking events and see what works best for you.
  • If an event isn’t working out for you or your business, try another. Don’t give up; find the right environment that suits your preferences.
  • Listen to others. It’s valuable for your own growth and development.
  • Utilise the Chamber membership. You only get out what you put in.

People decide what they believe about themselves, but you must remember you’re often your own worst critic. Others see you differently. As long as you stay true to yourself, listen as well as contribute, and remain open to meeting new people, networking can be a powerful way to grow your business and your personal confidence.
