From its base at Hortonwood in Telford, Serchem has built a reputation as a trusted manufacturer in one of the most critical areas of healthcare - infection control.

With exports to more than 20 countries and growing, the Shropshire business is proving that a strong product, clear strategy and the right partnerships can take a regional manufacturer onto the global stage.

The business

Serchem specialises in the manufacture of decontamination and hygiene chemicals for the healthcare sector.

Its product range includes enzymatic detergents, disinfectants, instrument cleaners and endoscope reprocessing solutions, all designed to support safe, effective infection control practices.

At the heart of the business is a simple but essential principle: patient safety. Every product is developed with the understanding that clean surgical instruments and safe endoscopes are not optional, they are fundamental to healthcare delivery.

The company manufactures the majority of its products in-house, maintaining control over quality and formulation, while working with specialist partners where needed to deliver complete solutions. Its credentials include ISO 9001, ISO 14001, MDR registration and the company’s most recent certification being ISO 13485 certification, supporting its ability to operate in regulated healthcare environments worldwide.

Going global

Serchem now exports to more than 20 countries, with established markets across Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Southeast Asia, and growing presence in regions including Latin America and Central Asia.

Rather than spreading itself too thinly, the business has taken a targeted approach to international growth.

“We focus on building strong, relationship-driven partnerships in the right markets,” Ed Grainger, International Sales Director said. “It’s about quality over quantity - getting the model right and then building on that success.

“This has led to a strategy of clustering around established markets, expanding into neighbouring countries where regulatory frameworks, healthcare systems and cultural expectations are aligned.”

The approach

Ed continued: “Serchem’s export model is built around specialist distribution partners.

“Finding the right partner is a key part of the process - one that requires time, due diligence and a shared commitment to long-term success.

“It’s never just about supplying product. It’s about training, technical support and growing together in a market.

“This partnership-led approach ensures that Serchem’s products are supported by the knowledge and expertise required to deliver consistent results in real-world healthcare environments.”

Making the most of opportunities

Trade missions and international exhibitions play an important role in Serchem’s growth but with a clear strategy behind them.

“You could be at an event every week if you let yourself, so you have to be selective,” Ed, who has more than 25 years experience in export and international business, continued. “Do your homework, understand who will be there and what you want to achieve.”

The company often takes a “try before you buy” approach, visiting markets on trade missions before committing to exhibiting. Once it does commit, it takes a long-term view.

“You won’t get the full return in year one. Relationships and reputation take time to build - you need to be consistent.

“Follow-up is also critical. Whilst the face to face meeting is most valuable, following up after the event is critical. That’s where relationships are built, opportunities develop and partnerships are created.”

Overcoming challenges

“Exporting in a highly regulated sector brings its own challenges. Healthcare standards vary between countries, with different registration requirements, documentation and approval processes to navigate.

“Cultural differences, logistics and wider geopolitical factors can also add complexity. But for Serchem, the fundamentals remain the same. It comes down to relationships, trust and integrity. With the right partners, you find a way through the challenges.”

Support from the Chamber

Serchem has found real value in its membership of Shropshire Chamber of Commerce, particularly when entering new markets.

“The Chamber has been genuinely helpful, initially for orientation and familiarisation, and now more formally through international networks and introductions,” Ed added.

“The ability to connect with in-country chambers and access trusted networks has helped the business identify and evaluate potential partners more effectively.”

Advice for other businesses

For companies considering international growth, Serchem’s advice is clear:

“Do it. It helps future proof your business. It brings fresh energy and opportunity. Preparation is key.

“Make sure your credentials are in place - certifications, compliance and documentation - it’s important to try and remove as many blockers as possible,” Ed said.

“Always use available support and learn from others. Talk to other exporters. There’s a lot of experience out there, and it’s incredibly valuable.”

Looking ahead

Serchem continues to identify opportunities in key growth regions, including Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Africa and parts of Europe.

While the business maintains a clear strategic direction, it also remains flexible.

“You have to be strategic and agile, but also opportunistic. You can’t be everywhere, but you shouldn’t close the door at the right opportunity,” Ed added.

With a strong product offering, a clear export model and a growing international network, Serchem is well positioned to continue its global journey - taking Shropshire manufacturing expertise to healthcare systems around the world.
