‘Local jobs for local people’ was the mantra of Jim McPhillips, back in 1964 when the McPhillips story began. Today, recruiting local people still plays the same important role in the company’s hiring strategy.

Our aim in the local community is to build lasting and rewarding careers. Employing those who live in the area ensures we are truly part of our local community. McPhillips currently employs 240 people, eighty percent of whom live within 20 miles of our Head Office.

Stewart White has been with McPhillips since 2005. Stewart joined as a site engineer, moving into site management followed by a further move into quantity surveying, where he now assumes the role of senior quantity surveyor…

Since 1997 we’ve run the McPhillips Apprenticeship Programme. Apprentices fulfil genuine roles and receive a competitive wage, whilst studying for an NVQ qualification at Telford College. Over 100 people have successfully completed the course, including Luke Courtnell in 2022…

“Building a career at McPhillips was my goal as soon as I began my apprenticeship. I’m really enjoying the opportunity to put the skills I’ve learnt into practise, which helps to meet the day-to-day challenges I face on site. I still have a long way to go and much more to learn, but what I’ve achieved so far is very satisfying.”

Forty percent of our workforce have been with McPhillips for between 21 – 30 years, we have colleagues with over four decades of unbroken service. Local jobs for local people has far ranging benefits to our local economy, welfare of employees and the environment.
