A team of walkers from a Shropshire building firm has hit its charity fundraising target after successfully conquering 12 Snowdonia mountain peaks in one day - but donations are still being accepted.
Nine hardy and fully committed employees of SWG Group had to endure some difficult weather conditions on the day but all completed the challenge to raise money for the Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity, which provides emotional, physical and financial support to the construction community.
The team had set a target of raising £1,000 but have passed that total and with money still being donated, staff at SWG have decided to keep the JustGiving page open in the hope of raising as much money as possible for a cause that is very close to their hearts.
Jacqui Gough, director of SWG, said the team had to tackle a distance of 30.5km during the challenge which saw them negotiating more that 2,300 metres of elevation across a day of gruelling activity.
“We are really proud of the magnificent SWG nine who took part - it’s a particularly daunting challenge and one not to be entered into lightly,” she said. “It was very tough going through the wind, rain and low cloud, although it did brighten up in the afternoon.
“It took a little longer than expected but they all absolutely smashed it! Our thanks go to them for agreeing to take it on, to our IT analyst John who met them at a refuel station after 10km - apart from that they were on their own - and to everyone who has donated to our chosen charity.
“You are never quite sure how a JustGiving appeal is going to work out and we set a £1,000 target initially which has been passed.
“We are really committed to supporting the Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity and as donations are still being made, we have decided to keep it open for a little while longer.
“We all know people who have benefitted from the good work Lighthouse is doing and we will do whatever we can to help and raise awareness for the charity.
“It’s staggering that every working day in the UK two construction workers take their own lives and Lighthouse is the only charity providing emotional, physical and financial support to the construction community through its 24/7 helpline.”
The SWG team trekked across the 12 peaks in the Glyder and Carneddau ranges in Snowdonia, starting at Ogwen Cottage and finishing at Aber Falls, a total distance of 30.5km and 2,309 metres of elevation.
SWG Group has offices in Welshpool and Wolverhampton, delivering construction projects across Mid Wales, Shropshire, Herefordshire and the West Midlands.
