Vepa, the trailblazing furniture manufacturer, is bringing renewed attention to one of its most innovative creations — the Hemp Chair, widely recognised as the world’s most sustainable chair. Combining forward-thinking design with cutting-edge biomaterial technology, the Hemp Chair represents a revolutionary step towards a circular, carbon-negative furniture industry.
A chair grown from nature
The Hemp Chair is made from 100% natural, renewable materials — a blend of hemp fibres and bio-resin — grown and produced locally in the Netherlands. Unlike conventional plastic-based chairs, every element of the Hemp Chair is free from fossil fuels, biodegradable, and fully recyclable. Hemp, one of the fastest-growing and most sustainable plants in the world, captures CO₂ as it grows, resulting in a product that is not only carbon neutral but carbon negative over its lifecycle.
“We wanted to prove that furniture could be both beautiful and beneficial to the planet,” says Gertjan de Kam, Head of Design at Vepa. “The Hemp Chair shows that sustainable innovation isn’t about compromise — it’s about creating better design with a lighter footprint.”
Sustainability without compromise
Produced in Vepa’s own circular manufacturing facilities, the Hemp Chair embodies the company’s commitment to local production, minimal waste, and renewable materials. Every component can be reused or remanufactured and at the end of its life, the chair can be shredded and moulded back into a new one — closing the loop completely.
The chair’s natural finish gives it a distinctive aesthetic, allowing the material’s organic texture to shine. Lightweight yet durable, it’s ideal for a wide range of environments — from contemporary offices to hospitality and education spaces — offering the perfect balance between design and responsibility.
Designed for the circular economy
As part of Vepa’s “no waste” manufacturing philosophy, the Hemp Chair is produced without harmful chemicals or synthetic additives. The production process is energy-efficient and generates almost no residual waste. Even the hemp used for the chair’s shell is sourced from regional hemp growers, ensuring minimal transportation impact and maximum traceability.
“This chair isn’t just sustainable — it’s regenerative,” adds Kerry Ford, Marketing Manager at Vepa. “By using plants instead of petroleum, we’re creating furniture that gives more back to the environment than it takes.”
Recognition and impact
Since its debut, the Hemp Chair has drawn international attention as a pioneering example of bio-based innovation in furniture design. It stands as a tangible proof of what can be achieved when technology, craftsmanship and environmental responsibility come together. As sustainability becomes a defining priority for workplaces and designers, Vepa’s Hemp Chair continues to inspire a new generation of circular products.
