“I have gained so much from being a trustee and would thoroughly recommend volunteering in this way. I developed my confidence, enhanced my leadership skills and broadened my understanding of organisational management. I have also seen the incredible impact dedicated staff at The Hive, Shrewsbury have on young people’s lives and the local community. It is a privilege to feel a small part of that.” – Helen O’Connor
Have you heard about trustee roles but never really known what they were? Have you wanted to do more for local charities but not known how? If so, Shropshire Wildlife Trust and Shropshire Charity Network would love to welcome you to their free, informal information event about trustee roles taking place on 29th April in Shrewsbury. You’re welcome from 4.30pm for a 5pm start and you'll find out about the responsibilities involved, hear from current trustees at various Shropshire charities, and find out about upcoming roles in the county.
Trustees play a vital role, helping with a charity's direction, strategy and impact but they seem to be real challenge to recruit. In fact, research suggests that nearly 74% of charities find it difficult to fill board positions. It is not surprising when only 6% of the population would definitely consider becoming a trustee, often due to a low understanding of the role. And yet 99% of trustees would recommend it!
Although we don't have specific data for Shropshire, it is a struggle that charity staff and consultants share with one another regularly. It’s that challenge which has inspired a passionate group to try and share more about what the role entails with new audiences.
So, if you are over 16 and have been considering how to give something back to the community; if you have been looking for a way to develop your skills or develop your chairing; or maybe you want to better understand different sectors of work across the county; why not find out more about being a trustee?
