A leading firm of quantity surveyors which has been shortlisted in two categories at this year’s Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin Apprenticeship Awards says it reflects years of investment in developing people.

CQS Solutions – which has bases in Telford, Birmingham and Mid Wales – says its policy of developing new talent within the construction industry is a huge part of its success.

Associate Director Richard Vickers has been shortlisted for Apprentice Mentor of the Year, while degree apprentice Michael Cardwell is a finalist for Construction Apprentice of the Year.

CQS owner Tim Lloyd said he was delighted for both Richard and Michael and said the nominations were a mark of what the company stands for.

“Being shortlisted twice is a proud moment for us, but it’s also a reminder of why we put so much energy into developing talent,” he said. 

“Richard has spent years shaping an apprenticeship culture that genuinely changes people’s futures. He’s built a framework that gives young professionals confidence, structure and real opportunity and he’s done it with patience, care and an unwavering belief in what people can achieve when they’re supported properly.

Tim says Michael’s shortlisting carries equal significance for the business.

“Michael’s determination has been extraordinary. He’s faced personal challenges that would have pushed many people out of the industry altogether, yet he chose to rebuild, retrain and push forward. 

“His resilience, professionalism and commitment to learning embody exactly what apprenticeships are meant to represent. We’re proud of the contribution he’s already making to the team and the example he sets for others.”

The company, which significantly outperformed the industry by posting double-digit growth last year, has seen eight trainees progressing through the business in the past decade.

Tim says the shortlistings reflect the long-term value of investing in people rather than relying solely on recruitment.

“Apprenticeships aren’t a bolt‑on for us, they’re part of how we build the future of the business. Seeing Richard and Michael recognised externally reinforces that the approach works, not just for the individuals involved, but for the strength and sustainability of the company as a whole.”

The winners of the Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin Apprenticeship Awards will be announced at a glittering ceremony on October 8.
