New outreach service aims to improve access to orthopaedic consultations, diagnostics and treatment pathways for rural communities across South Shropshire.

Nuffield Health Shrewsbury Hospital is set to launch a new Orthopaedic Outreach Clinic in Ludlow, providing patients across South Shropshire with faster and more convenient access to specialist healthcare closer to home.

Opening on 24 September 2026 at Ludlow Racecourse, the twice-monthly clinic will be led by leading Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon Mr Evans and is designed to support people living in one of Shropshire’s most rural regions.

Should surgery be required, procedures will take place at Nuffield Health Shrewsbury Hospital, with follow-up and post-operative appointments returning to Ludlow wherever possible, significantly reducing the need for repeated journeys.

South Shropshire serves a population of approximately 40,000–45,000 people spread across a large rural area. Many patients currently travel around 50 minutes each way for consultations, diagnostics and treatment appointments. By bringing specialist orthopaedic services closer to patients, Nuffield Health aims to improve access, reduce travel time and provide greater choice in healthcare.

Mr Evans, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, said:

"We're delighted to bring specialist healthcare services closer to the people of Ludlow, reducing the need to travel while maintaining the high standards of care our patients expect.

Rural communities can often face greater challenges accessing healthcare, and this clinic will help ensure patients can receive consultations, diagnostics and follow-up care much closer to home."

Initially, the outreach service will focus on orthopaedic care, with clinics running twice a month. Patients will benefit from rapid access to consultations and diagnostics, helping them to make informed decisions about their treatment sooner.

The service will be available to both self-pay and private medical insurance (PMI) patients. Nuffield Health also offers a range of flexible payment options, including 0% payment plans, helping to make treatment more accessible.

Sharon Ash, Hospital Director at Nuffield Health Shrewsbury Hospital, said:

"This outreach clinic represents an important investment in healthcare provision for South Shropshire. By bringing specialist expertise into Ludlow, we're making it easier for patients to access high-quality care while reducing the burden of travel.

Our aim is to provide a seamless patient journey, from initial consultation and diagnostics through to surgery and recovery, whilst keeping as much of that care as possible within the local community."
