Award-winning comedian, actress and author Francesca Martinez shared some powerful motivational messages with staff and students when she visited Telford College.

Francesca became the first female comic to win the prestigious Daily Telegraph Open Mic Award at the Edinburgh Festival, and has since performed around the world.

She is now in demand as a motivational speaker, and visited the college’s Wellington campus to speak to staff and students, and take part in a question-and-answer session.

Francesca, who has cerebral palsy, shared valuable insights into defying expectations, turning challenges into successes, developing resilience and tenacity through adversity, and overcoming physical and psychological barriers.

One of her key messages was to change the way we view our challenges - so that we approach them as opportunities for personal growth and deeper understanding.

Telford College executive director of employer engagement and partnerships, Sarah Davies, said: “Our students, and our staff, got so much out of Francesca’s session which was inspiring and thought-provoking.

“One of the biggest take-aways was that you can be who you want to be, regardless of your abilities, or what other people might think of you. Many students said they felt much more confident in themselves after listening to her presentation.”

Following her presentation, Francesca also signed copies of her new book, What The **** Is Normal?!, which has been published to critical acclaim and nominated for two national book awards.

Francesca has appeared on numerous TV shows including Live at the Apollo, The Jonathan Ross Show and Extras. Her last theatre tour took in 140 dates globally.

She has been nominated for the Motivator of the Year Award alongside the likes of Live Aid creator Sir Bob Geldof, and multiple Team GB rowing gold medallist Sir Matthew Pinsent.
