We were delighted to open the doors of the iconsys Technology Hub today and welcome Year 8 students from Thomas Telford School for a hands-on introduction to modern manufacturing.

At iconsys, we believe inspiring the next generation starts by giving young people the opportunity to explore, experiment and see where engineering and technology could take them.

Alongside getting hands-on with robotics, programming and virtual reality, we set the students a challenge:

🤖 If you could invent a robot to do ANYTHING, what would you make it do?

The ideas didn’t disappoint! We met Sara the Breakfast Bot, who cooks and serves your breakfast; Barbra, an automatic umbrella that floats above you and avoids hazards along the way; and Steve, a washing machine on wheels that takes care of the whole laundry process, washing, hanging out and even folding!

It was brilliant to see the creativity and problem-solving behind their ideas, exactly the kind of thinking that could shape the future of engineering.

A huge thank you to Daniel Brant CMSE® MIET, one of our engineers, for sharing his knowledge of robotics and programming; Luke Evans, our IT Technician, for running the VR experience; and Jack Hoey-best, our T-Level student currently on work experience with us from Telford College, for getting involved and helping make the day such a success.

And a big thank you to Cliff Sedgley, Director of Production, who took the students on a tour of our facility, sharing his own experiences from a career in engineering, how the industry has changed over the years, and what the future of engineering could look like for the next generation.
