As household budgets come under increasing pressure and colder weather approaches, Community Resource is encouraging people across Shropshire who are struggling with essential living costs to find out whether they could be eligible for support through its Essential Support Fund.

The fund provides practical financial assistance to people facing hardship, helping them manage essential costs and maintain their wellbeing during difficult periods.

Since launching in summer 2026, the Essential Support Fund has already supported more than 100 households across Shropshire, helping people access support when they need it most.

While the fund is available throughout the year, Community Resource is raising awareness this autumn as many households begin to face higher energy bills and increased heating costs.

For people living in Shropshire's rural communities, these challenges can be particularly significant. Many households are not connected to the mains gas network and rely on alternative fuels such as heating oil, which can make heating a home more expensive. Figures referenced by Shropshire Council show that around 17.7% of households in Shropshire were living in fuel poverty in 2023.

The charity hopes that by increasing awareness of the fund, more people will seek support before financial pressures become overwhelming.

Bev Baxter, Chief Executive of Community Resource, said:

"We know that many people across Shropshire are continuing to feel the impact of rising living costs, and those pressures can become even greater as the weather gets colder.

"The Essential Support Fund exists to provide practical support for people who may be struggling to afford the essentials and need some extra help.

"Since launching earlier this year, the fund has already supported more than 100 households across the county. That shows both the demand for this support and the difference it can make to people's lives.

"We would encourage anyone who thinks they may be eligible to visit our website and find out more. Reaching out for support early can make a real difference."
