Shropshire Chamber Member Offer
25% Off First Aid at Work Training with Lou Madeley
As a Shropshire Chamber of Commerce member, you can now save 25% on a full First Aid at Work (FAW) course delivered by Lou Madeley, Shropshire Chamber's approved first aid trainer.
This is the complete, HSE-recognised First Aid at Work qualification, not an abridged version. Delivered over three days (a minimum of 18 hours), it covers everything in the official FAW curriculum, giving your staff the skills and confidence to deal with genuine workplace emergencies, not just the basics.
Clinician-led training
There's a real difference between a trainer who teaches a syllabus and a clinician who has lived it. Lou holds a Master's degree in Advanced Clinical Practice and has spent decades working on the healthcare frontline, so the scenarios covered on this course aren't theoretical, they're drawn from real clinical experience of assessing and managing exactly these emergencies under pressure.
That clinical grounding shapes how the course is taught: staff learn not just what to do, but why it works and how to read a deteriorating casualty, which builds sharper judgement and genuine confidence rather than rote memory of a checklist. For higher-risk workplaces in particular, where the margin for error is smaller, that depth of experience is what turns a certificate into a first aider your team can actually rely on.
Don't just take our word for it, here's what past delegates say (Google reviews):
“I was unaware prior to the session that she had a medical background, including time spent working in the NHS and in an intensive trauma unit... For the first time, I left a session feeling genuinely prepared to administer CPR if needed.”
— Sarah H
“This is the first time that I've left a First Aid course feeling confident in administrating first aid if I need to. Lou's calm approach with her recalling on her vast experience in the medical field made it an enjoyable learning experience.”
— Emma B
“With practical examples and real expert knowledge / experience I've not found with other first aid courses.”
— Marie B

Why First Aid at Work, and not just Emergency First Aid at Work?
Under the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981 and HSE guidance (L74), every employer must carry out a first aid needs assessment to decide what provision is right for their workplace. That assessment is what determines whether Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW), a one-day course, is enough, or whether the fuller three-day First Aid at Work (FAW) qualification is needed.
An EFAW-trained first aider can give emergency first aid to someone who is injured or becomes ill at work, covering areas such as CPR, choking, bleeding and shock. This is generally considered sufficient for lower-risk workplaces, such as typical offices and shops.
HSE guidance points towards the fuller FAW qualification where the needs assessment identifies higher-level hazards, for example dangerous machinery, hazardous chemicals or confined space work, which is why sectors such as manufacturing, engineering, warehousing, agriculture and construction are typically treated as higher risk. FAW is also generally more appropriate for larger organisations (HSE's guidance uses around 25 or more employees as a benchmark even in lower-hazard settings), for sites spread across multiple buildings, and for premises that are remote from emergency medical services, where a more broadly trained first aider can make a real difference before paramedics arrive.
In practice, this means an FAW first aider holds all the same emergency skills as an EFAW first aider, plus the ability to manage a much wider range of injuries and illnesses, including fractures, spinal injuries, chest injuries, severe burns, poisoning and major illnesses such as heart attack, stroke and anaphylaxis. For higher-risk employers, that broader skill set isn't a nice-to-have: it's what a proper needs assessment is likely to require.
Every business's needs assessment is different, and Lou is happy to help you work out the right level and number of first aiders for your workplace, not just the legal minimum.
