Shropshire Chamber of Commerce has strengthened its support for the county’s business community with the appointment of a new Business Growth Manager.

Mel Board has lived in Shropshire for more than 20 years and has first-hand experience of the pressures and challenges of running a business in the county.

She originally built a successful career in the giftware industry, travelling internationally to source and develop products, before living and working in Hong Kong.

On returning to the UK, Mel moved into hospitality with her husband, developing a number of sites from derelict pubs and B&Bs into award‑winning inn, restaurants and function venues.

Their work achieved accolades such as AA Rosettes, county and national accommodation awards and recognition in the Michelin Guide.

Mel’s role at Shropshire Chamber focuses on working closely with companies to understand their ambitions, connect them with the right people, and demonstrate the practical ways that membership can help them to grow, adapt and thrive.

“I’ve spent most of my working life running businesses and have first-hand empathy with the challenges and opportunities businesses face today,” she said. “I hope my background enables me to offer practical and relevant support.

“I know what it feels like when things are going well, but I also know how quickly circumstances can change. That experience helps me relate to the challenges people are dealing with behind the business name.”

She added: “I approached the Chamber because I knew I wanted to use my experience to help other businesses thrive. What I enjoy most is talking to people, understanding their pressures, and connecting them with others who can support them.

“For me, it isn’t just about an immediate sale or a new member – it’s about building relationships and community with empathy and purpose.”
