Security Wise take immense pride in safeguarding their local heritage. A recent project at the Abbey Station Visitor Centre in Shrewsbury stands as a testament to this commitment. Entrusted with installing a state-of-the-art wireless fire alarm system, they aimed to enhance the safety of this historic landmark while preserving its architectural integrity.
A Glimpse into Abbey Station's Past
Originally opened in 1866, Shrewsbury Abbey Station was constructed on the site of the Benedictine Monastery’s Abbots Lodging for the Potteries, Shrewsbury and North Wales Railway, informally known as the 'Potts'. Over the years, it became an integral part of the Shropshire and Montgomeryshire Railway under Colonel Stephens. During World War II, the station was requisitioned by the War Department, serving a pivotal role and functioning as the Air Raid Precautions Centre for Shrewsbury. Today; the station has been transformed into the Abbey Station Visitor Centre, offering a captivating journey into Shrewsbury's railway heritage, and has been awarded a prestigious National Transport Trust Red Wheel heritage plaque.
Balancing Modern Safety with Historical Preservation
The challenge at Abbey Station was to integrate a modern fire alarm system without disrupting the site's historical essence. The wireless solution provided the perfect balance, ensuring comprehensive fire detection and alert capabilities while eliminating the need for intrusive wiring. This approach not only maintains the building's aesthetic and structural integrity but also offers flexibility for future system expansions or modifications.
A Rewarding Experience
Working at Abbey Station was more than just a project for them; it was an opportunity to contribute to the preservation of Shrewsbury's rich heritage. The visitor centre houses information panels and a collection of intriguing railway artefacts, making it a hidden gem for history and railway enthusiasts alike.
