Komplex Community has released a new podcast exploring the long-term impact of care system failures, through the real-life experience of a family whose journey highlights both the challenges and the opportunities for change within the sector.

The episode shares the story of Sarah and her son Luke, who is now supported by Komplex Community. Luke’s life has been shaped by a system that, over many years, failed to consistently protect, support, and listen to him.

His journey includes time at Winterbourne View, where abuse exposed significant and widely reported failings in care provision across the UK.

What followed is less widely discussed.

Over a 13-year period, Luke experienced 17 different placements. Each move required rebuilding trust, re-establishing routines, and adapting to new environments. This level of instability highlights a wider issue within the sector, where systems can prioritise placement availability over individual need.

As shared in the podcast, some of Luke’s experiences were deeply distressing. His story reflects the reality that, despite national attention and reform efforts, poor care and safeguarding failures can still occur.

However, the episode also highlights the impact of getting care right.

Since working with Komplex Community, Luke’s support has been built around his individual needs, preferences, and experiences. A consistent and trained team, alongside a personalised and trauma-informed approach, has enabled stability, trust, and meaningful progress.

For the first time, his family report feeling listened to and supported.

This contrast underlines an important message for the sector. High-quality care is not defined by placement alone, but by consistency, communication, and a genuine understanding of the individual.

The purpose of this podcast is to contribute to open and honest conversations across health and social care. While stories like Luke’s are difficult to hear, they are essential in driving awareness, accountability, and long-term improvement.

The episode is now available on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, YouTube and Amazon.
