Shingler Group was delighted to host its annual Apprenticeship Experience Day, welcoming a record number of over 20 applicants across both morning and afternoon sessions.
The event offered prospective apprentices a valuable insight into life within the construction industry, with hands on bricklaying and carpentry workshops forming the core of the day. Supported by dedicated mentors and former apprentices, candidates were guided through a range of practical tasks designed to showcase the skills and techniques required within each trade.
Following the workshops, attendees were given a guided tour of the company’s Boundary Fields development in Whittington. The tour was led by Managing Director Jeremy Shingler, Construction Director Jonathan Shingler, and Head of Quality and Aftercare Matt Cadwallader. Each shared their experience of working within the industry, offering first hand insight into the day-to-day realities of a live construction site while highlighting key features of the development.
Shingler Group currently employs 13 carpentry and bricklaying apprentices who work across sites throughout Shropshire. Each apprentice is supported by a dedicated mentor, ensuring they receive consistent guidance as they develop their skills on site. In addition to practical experience, apprentices begin day release at Shrewsbury Colleges Group from their second year onwards.
The apprenticeship programme has been carefully designed to provide a well-rounded introduction to construction. During the first year, apprentices rotate across all site trades, shadowing experienced professionals and assisting where required. This structured approach allows individuals to gain a broad understanding of the industry before selecting a specific trade to pursue.
In the second year, apprentices choose their preferred discipline and begin formal college training alongside continued site-based learning. One day each week is spent at college, with the remainder dedicated to gaining hands on experience alongside Shingler Group’s skilled workforce.
The third year continues this combination of practical and academic development, culminating in a comprehensive end point assessment. Apprentices must successfully complete both theoretical and practical examinations in order to achieve their final qualification.
In the fourth and final year, apprentices decide whether to progress onto advanced craft qualifications. Throughout this stage, individuals take on increasing responsibility on site, applying their knowledge with greater independence while continuing to work under supervision.
Applications for Shingler Group’s 2026 apprenticeship intake are now closed. However, those interested in applying for the 2027 programme and joining the company’s award-winning apprenticeship scheme are encouraged to get in touch.
